A packet analyzer is a computer program or piece of computer
hardware that is used to intercept, decipher, and examine packets of data that
are being relayed across a network. As the data is streaming, the packet
analyzer takes each packet and interprets the raw data according to certain
specifications. A packet analyzer may also be called a network analyzer,
protocol analyzer, or packet sniffer.
Packet analyzers can be used in a variety of ways. For
example, they can analyze network problems, detect network intrusions and
network misuse, monitor network usage, filter suspect content from network
traffic, debug network protocol implementations, and verify internal control
effectiveness. These are just a few of the ways packet analyzers are used.
